In this Twittering, texting, IG’ing, IM’ing world we live in today, I would like to make my annual small request and plea:
Could we all PLEASE (especially Black people), NOT trivialize this great man and his legacy by reducing his name to initials and a hastag?
If you don’t have the time or inclination to say or type or write his whole name, how about at least do “Dr. King?”
I bristle at the use of “MLK,” yet just about everybody does it. Why does so much have to be reduced and abbreviated? Y’all aren’t any busier than previous generations like mine were. (In fact, one could argue that WE were busier because we didn’t have all the time savers that are available today, but that’s an argument for another diary and another day.)
Anyway, I just beleive that some things and some persons who have done SO much to advance the cause of justice in our society, their names ought not be abbreviated and reduced to hashtags. (And now I have to add tags or the diary won’t post.)
Addendum:
January is Blood Donation Month. What greater act of service on the day we honor Dr. King, is there than potentially saving lives by donating blood?
In the upstate New York area where I live there is a Red Cross blood drive being held at the Saratoga Casino Hotel on Monday January 16, 2023 from 12pm to 6pm. There are probably other drives in various locations as well.
You can register at RedCross.org or call 1-800-733-2767. This retired RN will be there donating. So you can be there or be square. (do they still say that?)
P.S.-Type “O’s” you’re really needed because you’re the “universal donor.”
