I am joining Most Awesome Nana and several others in the Community Fundraisers group in strongly supporting this community effort for elenacarlena. Ever since she joined Daily Kos, Elena has been a strong and regular presence while participating very widely and quickly becoming a valued community member. As an example of this commitment, we have worked closely together (along with JoanMar, 2thanks, Tortmaster, and others) behind the scenes for the past year in helping to finalize and post weekly diaries on police brutality and Medicaid expansion through the Support the Dream Defenders group. As you know, she is also a regular diarist for the War on Women diary series.
Please help Elena through this difficult time for her as well as her beloved pooties and woozle. On behalf of the entire CFs group, thank you. JekyllnHyde

Welcome everyone to our Derby Day Party!
We are going to have a horse race (also known as the "most exciting two minutes in sports"), a few mint juleps, and a good time raising funds for our fellow Kossack, elenacarlena. Everyone is invited to join us to make a comment, tip, rec, republish, share on Facebook, promote on Twitter, send good vibes, or donate.
Elena is always ready to help others with information, good wishes and when possible, money. But now she is the one who needs help. Many of you read her previous diary and responded with great kindness. Unfortunately, the situation has not yet resolved itself. She still lacks enough funds for her special needs cats.
Please follow me below the bourbon fudge swirl for a few words from Elena.
An Appeal from Elena
I SO appreciate Most Awesome Nana and the fundraising crew throwing this Derby Day Party for me! I hope you'll enjoy it. There's nothing like being in Kentucky on the first Saturday in May. Hopefully focusing for the remainder of May on the job and Les Beastiables hunts will result in a decent income stream once again.
Last week we raised a total of $780, for which I thank everyone SO much! That went/will go to the monthly payment for my health insurance ($150), the big overdue utility bill ($300 for our very freezing February), a credit card payment ($200), a few smaller bills, and some cat food and groceries. And the big package of TP. I really needed that!
Now I need to cover rent ($750) and some other expenses. I have two special needs cats who take most of my money:
For Oreo, who is a diabetic: Prescription diabetic cat food at $75/month;
Insulin at $50/month; Insulin needles at $10/month. Total: $135/month
For Ginger, who has IBS: Prescription IBS cat food at $90/month; Probiotics at $20/month; Enzymes and prebiotics at $10/month; Enzyme chews at $10/month. Total: $130.00/month
For both: Gushy food to make the prescription stuff palatable at $90/month; and a
large bag of prescription dry cat food at $70/month. Total: $160/month
So that's a total of $425 per month for the cats. Yes, it is a lot. But I gave them my word that I'd take care of them when I adopted them, so the animals are my priority. I spend more than twice my disposable income on my pets as I do on myself. They are why I don't have a car. I bought a bus pass just a little while ago, which will last me about another two months, so my transportation needs are taken care of.
Rocky (relatively young, medium-sized dog without special needs -- yet!) and I eat like normal beings. I still have a bit of "emergency" food in the pantry for myself, so can probably get by with about $350 for essentials.
If you donated last week, you have my undying gratitude and that of the animals! If you can't afford to donate, that's certainly understandable. If you ever need extra pet hair, you know where to find us, we have plenty of that we can spare! Please rec, tip, republish, comment, and keep the excitement going. We'll have Derby Day refreshments and virtual party gifts too in the comments!
Thank you all, lovely Kossacks!

Probably the easiest way to donate is to go through PayPal. If you don't have an account, it's easy to set up. Please tell PayPal you're sending to "a friend" via your PayPal account so they don't charge a fee.
Here's How You Can Help Elena
If you have a PayPal account and have never used it to send money to anyone, it is really simple.
- Go to PayPal.com.
- Click Send Money to Family and Friends.
- Enter elenacarlena's email address (which is karlekonsultants@cs.com) and amount you are sending. The sender's name is visible to the recipient.
- As a reminder, you can also help by keeping this diary on the Rec List, republishing to your Daily Kos groups, linking to your Facebook pages, and helping to spread the word through Twitter.
Thank you for caring and your generous contribution.
You can receive all future postings by clicking this link for the Community Fundraisers Group. Then, click 'Follow' and that will make all postings show up in 'My Stream' of your Daily Kos page.

If you do not want to use PayPal (as some of us don't), please send a private message to Elena and she will provide a USPS address. You can send a check or a postal money order.
The goal for today is $1600. That is more than Elena has listed, but we all know that not having enough means something else is sure to happen - and a little cushion gives so much peace of mind.
For each donation today, we'll add horses to the Derby Day racetrack and move them along! By the end, some random horse will reach the Finish Line! And win the Roses! Who will it be? Can we get it done in time for you to watch the real Derby on TV?
PLEASE NOTE: No horses are harmed during the DKos Derby race! These horses are self-motivated!
And again....many, many thanks and heaps of gratitude for every tip, rec, republish and kind thought.
Sun May 03, 2015 at 5:07 AM PT: Sunday morning - we kind of got jammed up by the DK reboot yesterday. So we are continuing the party today! I am going to go make a batch of mimosas and pick up some coffee cake (trust me, you DON'T want my homemade). Stop by and we'll celebrate American Pharoah's spectacular win!
Sun May 03, 2015 at 4:47 PM PT: One more time! Let's party! We are still a ways from our goal and we are asking one more time for help. Please tip, rec, share, and donate. Thank you very much.
Sun May 03, 2015 at 5:43 PM PT (elenacarlena): As of 8:40 we have $220 toward our total. We're winding down the final hours of our fundraiser. So for comments I'll add roses! And for donations I'll move horses! The original idea was the finish line represented our donations goal, but I'll let it represent the end of today instead.
